It was a momentous occasion when Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, ceremoniously inaugurated Assumption University’s Bang Na campus on June 27,2002 at 15.00 hrs.
The skies over Bang Na campus let up the rains for a brief spell which later cleared as if to join in the warm and festive greetings accorded to the gracious Princess. On hand to welcome and receive the Princess were the governors of Bangkok and Samut Prakan, the head of Bangkok Archdiocese Cardinal Michael Michai Kitbunchu and Superior General Rev. Bro. Sakda Kitcharoen, forty Gabrielite brothers, special invited guests and the university community led by Rector Rev. Bro. P. Martin Komolmas.
Following a brief but very formal reception the Princes cut the ribbon to inaugurate the campus and pose for a commemorative photograph with the Brothers of St. Gabriel.
The Princess then proceeded to the ceremonial hall in the Cathedral of Learning where she handed down awards to donors and friends of Assumption University. The awards list included Rev. Fr. Francis Anastasia (Fr. Nash) and Rev. Bro. Patrick S.G. Both these religious leaders were recognized for their sincere friendship and support for the university.
Thereafter the Princes blessed and laid the foundation stone for the projected 9 story Srisakdi Charmonman IT building.
Next on the programme was the inauguration of the Chapel of Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort, the founding saint of the order of the Brothers of St. Gabriel. In a meaningful prayer ceremony, the congregation invoked God’s graces and blessings on Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The Princess also opened the Assumption University Academic Exhibition and thrilled her admirers when she stopped by certain faculty booths to appreciate the academic projects. The Princess was obviously impressed and happy to spend but a fleeting hour at Assumption University’s grand Bang Na campus.
As the Royal motorcade made its exit through the campus, gentle drops of rain began to fall. Everyone felt the cheer and thrill of the Royal visit in a way only Her Highness could engender with her innate grace and charm.
