The 2nd Seminar on Monitoring the Quality of Thai Youth: Current Problems and Solutions

The ABAC-KSC Internet Poll Research Centre, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation jointly mounted the “Vacation 2002 Project” to survey the extent of involvement of Thai youth in drug abuse and other social evils and vices. The study covered students pursuing formal and informal education and opportunity was also taken to monitor the habits and lifestyles concerning the way they spend their leisure time including the kind of entertainment they favoured, their sexual mores and the trends for the future.

A seminar was organised to review the results of the project on May 10, 2002 and this was attended by the Interior Minister, H.E. Purachai Piumsomboon, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office General Thamarak Isarangura and other social activists, in addition to the President and Vice President, faculty members and students of Assumption University.

The essence of opinious expressed and decisions reached at the seminar were as follows.

  1. There are both strengths and weaknesses in the character of our youth and adults must assume responsibility to provide advice and guidelines where necessary. (Janista Liuchalermwong, M.P.)
  2. A close and warm family circle is the essential basis of development of our youth and parents must nurture them with love and care, and act as teachers, counsellors and friends. (Dr. Somphong Chitladap)
  3. The problems of the youth are getting to be serious and organisations and individuals must collaborate and pool resources to improve the situation. (Senator Maleerat Kaewka)
  4. Children are more likely to be sexually abused and exploited in the future and families must try to be united and vigilant in adopting protective and preventive measures. (Senator Montree Sintavichai)
  5. Children could be placed in three categories, those with problems, those at risk and those enjoying quality life and care. Appropriate activities must be organised to keep watch and extend help. (Dr. Supakom Buasai)
