LS Club Speech Marathon

The Lingua Scholasticus (LS) Club is holding a Speech Marathon for the summer session in ABAC. This club which was founded by Ms. Ayngilessa Tady and Mr. Sutthisak C. C. Skul held their first project for this year. There are four time periods in this competition or marathon. The competition uses a cumulative points system and therefore, at the end of the fourth period for the competition, the participants will be rated based not only according to brainpower, but also based on their perseverance and motivation to join.
For the first period, which was termed “The 1st LS Speech Marathon,” it was held at D33 on March 27,2002. For this event, the participants were asked to deliver an individual speech. The purpose
of this speech marathon was to invite students to express their ideas upon the topics given. The topics included:
- The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.
- The computer as man’s new best friend.
- It is through the heart that one sees rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.
- A tree that bends under the wrath of a storm knows its true power.
- Sowing the seed of trust takes effort (Wasant Techawon-tham).
The participants for this event included Mr. Sautharadh Jund (3rd p1ac.e winner), Mr. Quazi Nazmus Sakib, Ms. Artati Subagio, Mr. Jayeed Imran Ahmad (1st place winner), and Mr. Rishikesh Chhabra (2nd place winner). The competition was judged by Dr. Marisa Antonaya.
For the second period which was termed “The 2nd LS Speech Marathon,” it was held at the Seminar Room of D building near the teacher’s lounge on April 10, 2002 between 14.00-15.30 hrs. For this event, the participants were asked to deliver an individual persuasive speech. The topics given included:
- There should be laws banning the Cloning of Humans.
- Terrorism must be stopped by all means possible-even violence.
- Euthanasia should be legalized.
- There should be media censorship by the government in Thailand.
- Everybody should start using computers.
The participants for this event included Ms. Chaowarat Y., Ms. Artati Subagio (2nd place winner), Mr. Vijo V. (3rd place winner), Mr. Zuazi Nazmus Sakib, Mr. Rishikesh Chhabra (1st place winner), and Mr. Jayeed Imran Ahmad. The competition was judged by Mr. Robert Chong-charoen-Choke-Skul.
For the 3rd LS Speech Marathon, an extemporaneous speaking contest was held. According to the rules for this specific competition, the participant had to deliver a 5- minute speech. The competition was held at P27 and the topics given were the following:
- Glass Ceiling: an unofficial but real impediment to somebody’s advancement into upper-level management positions because of discrimination based on the person’s gender, age, race, ethnicity, or sexual preference.
- Stem cells: Is it really important?
- Free Trade: Would we be better off without it?
- Human Trafficking: Illegal transfer of people for the purpose of manipulation through prostitution, sweatshops, etc.
- World Cup: And its effect on the Thai university students
The participants for this competition included: Mr. Rishikesh Chhabra (1st place winner), Mr. Jayeed Imran Ahmad (1st winner also), Mr. Rut C., Mr. Chinnapat C. (2nd place winner), Mr. TJ (3rd place winner), and Ms. Nui. The Judge for this event was Mr. Manuel Librodo.
The LS Club Speech Marathon’s aim is not only for competition purposes but also to help students practice public speaking as well as to facilitate an academic activity wherein they can improve their public speaking skills as well as meet new and diverse groups of people. Not only the participant’s scores or points but also comments from the judges regarding how best to improve each individual speakers public speaking skills will be revealed to them.
The LS Club has been greatly supported by the Registrar, A. Kamol Kitsawad for the advertising of its competitions. A. Jude from the Learning Support Center has also given the club the necessary information in order for it to work better. Most of all, the two advisers for this club, A. Glen Chatelier, and Dr. Marisa Antonaya has also given their full support in establishing a literary environment here in ABAC. Bro. Bancha is currently the patron of this club.
