This festival is usually celebrated all over Thailand on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month which fell on November 11 this year. People in thousands thronged to the banks of Bangkok's canals and the Chao Pbraya River to light up and release their krathongs into the water. The belief that prayers said and wishes expressed while floating the krathongs will be answered or realised quickly added a little solemnity to this occasion. Although the idea of Styrofoam krathongs was mooted most people stuck to old and natural materials such as bannara trunks and leaves. On our campus there were colourful and picturesque scenes with the administrators, staff, faculty and students celebrating the occasion with traditional costumes, songs and dances and we reproduce a few photos for the enjoyment of our readers. The blessing most appreciated by revellers and observers alike was the absence of noise from exploding fire crackers which was totally banned this year and hope-fully for lovers of peace and seren-ity this precedent will be followed in the future.
