This year Wai Kru was celebrated on Saturday June 22 on the lawn and steps of the Coronation Building. A large number of students and faculty members gathered at the appointed venue by 16.30 hrs. The ceremony is held year after year yet, it never losers the colour , the spontaneity or solemnity of the occasion. One can easily see the innocence, trust and devotion on the faces of the students while their teachers openly wear a glow of love, benevolence and solicitousness in their mien and their demeanours. There is, as it were, a transcendental bond between the teacher and the pupil, the learner and the learned. Wai Kru is a time for rededication to our students, a time for resolving to do our best for them. To do our best entails not only lifelong learning but also honing and whetting our intellects and our skills all the time so that we are past masters in our own fields of specialisation. We must remember that we can easily tumble from our pedestals, slip in our quality and standards if we are not always on guard and keep abreast of the challenges. A pertinent and poignant example of failing the test occurred a few years ago. American educators and professors were dismayed and flabbergasted when a research analyst pointed out that their curricula for Science and Math subjects were inferior compared to japanese and European models. There were howls of protests throughout the country forcing the Government to amend laws and pass new legislation to immediately import competent, qualified teachers in Science and Mathematics from Europe.
