Prof. Carter, a worldrenowned scholar in the field of Applied Linguistics, as the Head of the University of Nottingham’s Department of English Studies, has subsequently entered into a subsidiary agreement with the Institute for English Language Education (IELE) of Assumption University.

Consistent with the general framework of the University to University agreement, the departmental agreement provides for the following arrangements:

  1. A Ph. D. programme for English Studies that will be largely conducted over the internet. This programme already has two teachers from Assumption University enrolled in it. The IELE will act as the regional hub for the Ph. D., with students having the option to travel to Thailand for personal supervision from IELE faculty. There will be a special fee charged for suitable applicants from Assumption University.
  2. Exchange of faculty members. Nottingham and IELE will explore the possibility for members of the University of Nottingham’s faculty to visit Assumption University to conduct research and thesis supervision.
  3. Post- Doctoral fellowships will also be offered to graduates of the University of Nottingham to work in the IELEfor periods of up to one year.
  4. A joint- research programme has also been sketched out. One research area of particular interest is the development of a corpus of Thai writing in English.

This agreement is the result of initiatives taken by the Dean of the IELE, Prof. Alan Maley, who has worked closely with Prof. Carter and members of the Nottingham English Studies fatuity over the years.
