XXI International Congress of the Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures

Dr. Suthira Duangsamosorn presents her academic paper in a session on the Asian diaspora, chaired by Dr. Edward Vargo.

Assumption University sent two delegates to attend the above Congress organized by Zimbabwe University in Harare from 26 July to 31 July 1999.

Dr. Somboon Duangsamosorn, Director of Thai Art and Culture was assigned to observe the proceedings of the meeting in its entirety and back up a proposal made by Assumption to hold the next triennial congress in Thailand.

Dr. Suthira Duangsamosorn, Chairperson of the Department of Business English, presented a paper entitled "Themes, Characters and Influences in Contemporary Thai Writing in English." She was joined by scholars from India, Singapore, and USA in the session on Asia.

A total of 84 scholars from all over the world attended the conference and presented papers in their field of study.

Dr. Edward Vargo who is Assistant Secretary - General of FILLM also attended as a participant from Thailand and introduced the theme for the next congress which is to be held at Assumption University in the year 2002.

Assumption University's proposal to hold the next congress was very warmly received. The new President of FILLM, Ms. Maria A. Seixo of Portugal, praised Assumption University, principally a business school, to have taken such unprecedented initiative in giving languages and literatures a prominent place in the curriculum of an institution of higher learning.
