TENTH ASIAN-PACIFIC CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING ISSUES.

 
The above conference cosponsored by College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Sid Craig School of Business, California State University, was successfully held during October 25 - 28, 1998, at Maui, Hawaii. The Assumption University was represented at the conference by Mr.Myint Thein, Ledturer Accounting Department, who also presented a paper titled Accounting Education and Profession in Burma (Myanmar). Thailand was represented by Professor Dr. Orapin Chartabsorn, Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University, who was also a member of advisory committee to the conference.

On October 25, the conference opened three workshops for Teaching International Accounting , Trends in Technologies for Ocean - Spanning Asynchronous Learning and Accounting Research. Over 300 delegates from 150 universities and 32 countries took part in the conference and 142 research papers were presented.

At the plenary session on October 26, Mr.Karel Van Hulle, Head of Financial Information and Accounting Standards Unit, European Commission, who is a former professor of Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, gave an interesting speech about the creation of the new single currency the Euro, for all European states. He said the transaction cost due to the use of different national currencies amounted from 0.5% to 1% of GDP, resulting in wastage of scarce of resources. He also explained how an exchange rate mechanism would be installed with the European Central Bank playing the pivotal role.

After the plenary session the conference was divided into panel discussions and many sessions were organised for different issues namely, financial accounting issues, international accounting and harmonization, auditing issues, studies in capital markets, cross - cultural studies, audit risks and auditor choice, issues in accounting education, social and public sector accounting, research I accounting practice, etc. All the participants and presenters switched from one session to another so as to participate in their respective topic of special interest.

It was encouraging and a source of pride that two Thai overseas scholars presented research papers at the conference. Dr. Obeua S. Persons, Rider University, U.S.A., presented a paper titled Using Accounting Information to Differentiate Good vs. Bad Finance Companies whilst Dr.Nongnooch Kuasirikun, University of Southampton, U.K., red and delivered another paper on Accounting Disclosure in Thailand : Towards a Critical Accounting Framework.

The previous conference was successfully organised in 1997 at Bangkok's Shangri - la Hotel co - hosted by the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University.
