ST.Martin VR Centre at Assumption University.

The first Virtual Reality training centre in Asia Pacific region was opened recently at a cost of around 80 million baht which shared equally by the sponsors, the Prosolvia of Sweden and Assumption University. Under the joint venture agreement Prosovia has to provide software application and tools, training and expertise with Assumption University offering building space with 20 PCs and five Silicon Graphics workstations.

Mr. Kitti Phothikiti, the newly appointed Director of the V.R. Centre explained that the facility was intended to enhance knowledge and skills of our students in interractive visual simulation and that at the same time we would also be marketing consultancy services to organisations both in public and private sectors. He further explained that V.R. simulations can result in cost cutting and industry and this can be achieved through creation of interactive scenarios and added that this was somewhat similar to working out appropriate solutions through cartoon animations. He said so far the Police Department and The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, had shown interest in crime scenes, fire fighting and flood Centre for application when actual events take place.

Achan Kitti said that VR. Technology is fairly new in Thailand and since it is very effective and useful, the courses are highly valuable for interested students, alumni and entrepreneurs. This is because seeing a project or model in a blue print is not enough. The VR can simulate interactive models and that can create more understanding, he said.

Software tools used for training include Oxygen, the solution for bringing CAD models to life, and EON, a software for VR and visual simulation on PC. EON can turn spreadsheets, word documents and slide shows into interactive 3D presentations.

The VR courses are held every month and vary from one day seminars in 3D Interactive Real-time Visual Simulation and four-day courses in 3D Interactive Real-Time Visual Simulation on PC and the Internet. The registration fees are 1,500 baht and 8,000 baht repectively. For more information please contact, phone: 318-4666, fax 318-3883, email: vrc@au.ac.th or visit http://www.vrc.au.ac.th
